Billiard Tables and Beer Make Growing Older Healthier and More Fun

If you’re an avid fan of beer and the game of billiards, here’s something to raise your glass to. A researcher in Denmark has discovered that spending time around billiard tables and consuming beer at least four times a week can actually improve a man’s quality of living in his golden years. Lizette Borreli writes, in her article for Medical Daily, how this kind of scientific fact can make men look forward to retirement.

According to a recent study from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, drinking beer while playing a game of billiards with friends can help keep men active and combat the aging process.

(Aske Juul) Lassen believes playing pool, or billiards, is the perfect exercise due to its long periods of rest between activity.

Moderate alcohol use, especially when the beverage of choice is red wine, is thought to improve heart health, circulation and sociability.

This study coincides with another done in 2010 about the effects of alcohol on the elderly. The conclusion here is that moderate alcohol use (1 to 3 drinks per day) does improve heart health, circulation, and sociability – three areas seniors need to pay close attention to.

Billiards beats card games

The perception of senior recreation in the last three decades was limited to card games and watching television. These days, wherein life expectancies get pushed forward on a regular basis, older folks do more and live a lot longer. The research team, led by Lassen, study author and anthropologist from University of Copenhagen’s Center for Healthy Aging, observed elderly males aged 70 to 95 as they socialized in bars and activity centers. The researchers saw how billiards and pool are ideal games for this age group.

The game involves periods of activity and passivity, which means they can continue playing for long stretches without exhausting themselves. Likewise, billiards is physical activity that can last long hours, but unlike more strenuous exercises, it encourages resting periods.

Having a billiards table at home would not only be convenient for the seniors, but would also give friends and relatives peace of mind, knowing their loved ones are enjoying themselves safely at home rather than in some tavern full of strangers.
